Modern Greek Dining: Anatoli Bondi Junction

Lovers of Mediterranean fare rejoice: a new Greek-inspired restaurant has opened inside Bondi’s multi-level complex The Eastern, joining gourmet toastie and craft beer specialist The Publican, rooftop Mexican eatery El Topo, and rum bar and diner Chimmi’s.

Anatoli - Spelt, swede, red cabbage, apple and walnut2

Already head chef at El Topo, Matt Fitzgerald has taken the helm at the newly opened Anatoli, studying the cuisine and enlisting the help of two generations of Greek families to ensure authenticity. But it’s not all standard taramasalata and charred octopus: Fitzgerald has devised imaginative dishes like the goats curd, tomato, wild weed and red onion salad, roast sardines with fennel and lemon, whole artichoke in lemon butter, and the poached pear dessert, which comes imaginatively served with ginger snaps in a glass preserves jar.

The decor has the requisite European flavour – with a sweeping marble bar taking centre stage – but its monochromatic palette, simple cross-back chairs and staggering wine collection lining the walls keeps Anatoli looking high-end, elegant and up-to-date. Speaking of wine, the 250 bottles on offer were hand-picked by consultant Alon Sharman and sommelier Manuel Canto of two Michelin star Il Pellicano and three Michelin star Enoteca Pinchiorri, both in Italy.
